School Library

Our school is so fortunate to have a library on our campus with our very own librarian, Mrs. DeCovnick. Each week students in all classes visit the library for approximately thirty minutes. Reading stories and looking at picture books encourages children of all ages to build a love for literature and reading. Mrs. DeCovnick has a special ability to foster this love for reading by engaging students in stories using big books, flannel boards, puppets, books on tape and a wide variety of fun and educational materials that support monthly themes, specific authors, illustrators, and award winning books. Scholastic Book Orders are distributed monthly to all families so that “at home” libraries can be enhanced. Points are earned for each book purchased through our Scholastic Book Order Program and in return all points earned directly benefit the classrooms and library at Cornerstone Preschool.

Character Education

Cornerstone’s Character Education Program helps students to be more aware of attitudes, feelings, and moral and civic mannered behaviors of themselves and others around them at school, home, and in the community. Stories, role-play, projects, thoughtful interactions and dialogue, help students to identify those values that best define a moral society. The core character traits that we feel are valuable to our students and school are: Friendly, Respectful, Cooperative, Kind, Tolerant, Honest, Fair, Responsible, Patient, Self-Confident, Independent, and Adaptable.

Kindermusik

Twice a month for thirty minutes all students participate in individualized class instruction with our music teacher from Kindermusik. Kindermusik’s engaging, developmentally appropriate music classes offer our students thoughtfully integrated sequences of activities that set the stage for optimal, multi-sensory learning. Each movement and music class is creatively designed to enhance a child’s cognitive, language, physical, creative and social emotional development. The activities during class are designed to develop vocal skills, foster music appreciation, and build a foundation for formal music instruction later on. Children learn to play all kinds of age-appropriate instruments and to appreciate music of varying styles and origin.

Yoga, Breath and Movement

Life can be busy even for a toddler or young school aged child. We believe that allowing children to quiet their minds and bodies can bring about a sense of peacefulness, focus, calmness and control. Our twice-monthly yoga, breath and movement class supports our students in finding their inner peace while strengthening balance, coordination, and mindfulness. Yoga, breath and movement exercises are further explored in all classrooms whenever possible.

On Site School Assemblies

Cornerstone welcomes our local community leaders and business’ to visit our campus. For example in December when we have our Toy Drive, our local fire department comes to visit our students, collects the toys and educates the students on fire safety and gives them a true fire department demonstration. In February, Oak Park Dentistry for Children visits our campus and teaches the children about good dental hygiene.
